Blue Evening

vrijdag 13 oktober 2017 , 20:00 - 23:00 uur

The Blue Evening is a marine conservation themed cultural event brought to you by Mision Tiburon. The event coincides with a scientific shark conference of the European Elasmobranch Association, organized from 12-14 October at the KIT Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam.

With the support of the artist Carlos Hiller and the musician Tupac Amarulloa, they will present a performance called “The life of a hammerhead shark”: A journey from birth in a nursery area in coastal waters, until it reaches the protected ocean waters of Cocos Island. The show will have a unique result.

Mision Tiburon is a non-profit organization from Costa Rica. During the past six years they have promoted the conservation of sharks and rays, studying endangered species, and identifying critical, coastal and ocean habitats. Their main project focuses on studying the population of the scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini), a migratory and endangered species that is not only of high ecological value and a tourism asset for Costa Rica, it is the emblem species of Cocos Island, also known as Sharks Island.

In 2012, an important nursery area for hammerheads was identified in Golfo Dulce, in the South Pacific of Costa Rica. Since then, it has been Mision Tiburon’s main objective to promote actions to protect the species; and to turn Golfo Dulce in a Sanctuary for scalloped hammerhead sharks.

Andrés López Garro, the director of Mision Tiburon, talks about his organization and the creation of this performance.
